The food supply chain

Food in the food supply chain typically passes through five stages from farm to consumer. The first three stages are mainly concerned with food loss; the latter two are mainly concerned with food waste. The stages are as follows:

  1. Agricultural production
  2. Post-harvest handling and storage
  3. Processing
  4. Distribution
  5. Consumption

For different food products the types of loss and waste in these stages are quite different.
